Medicare and senior insurance help in Texas

Texas has four of the biggest Medicare markets in the country, and each one runs on its own set of plans and doctor networks. A Medicare Advantage plan sold in Dallas County does not carry over to Harris County, and a hospital system that dominates Austin may sit out of network in San Antonio.

That is why our Texas sites stay local. Each one covers the plans, hospitals and enrollment questions for its own metro, and this page connects them.

Cities

Our Texas locations

  • Dallas, TX

Dallas seniors pick from one of the deepest Medicare Advantage markets in Texas. That sounds like good news, and it can be, but more choices also means more networks to check. A plan that lists Baylor Scott & White may leave out UT Southwestern, and the reverse is just as common.

Counties: Dallas County, Collin County, Denton County, Tarrant County

  • Houston, TX

Houston is home to the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world, so many seniors here care most about one thing: keeping access to a specific specialist or cancer center. That single question can rule out half the Advantage plans on the market.

Counties: Harris County, Fort Bend County, Montgomery County, Galveston County

  • San Antonio, TX

San Antonio has one of the largest military retiree populations in the country, thanks to Joint Base San Antonio. For those retirees, Medicare works alongside TRICARE For Life, and the rules differ from what civilian retirees face. TRICARE For Life requires Part B, so skipping it is not an option.

Counties: Bexar County, Comal County, Guadalupe County, Kendall County

  • Austin, TX

Austin's senior population has grown fast, and a lot of that growth sits north in Williamson County. Georgetown is home to Sun City Texas, one of the largest 55-and-over communities in the state, and Round Rock and Cedar Park keep adding retirees every year.

Counties: Travis County, Williamson County, Hays County

Texas Medicare questions

Can I keep a Texas Medicare Advantage plan if I move to another Texas city?
Not always. Advantage plans have county-based service areas. A move out of your plan's area gives you a Special Enrollment Period to pick a new plan where you now live.
Who gives free, unbiased Medicare counseling in Texas?
HICAP, the Texas State Health Insurance Assistance Program, at 1-800-252-9240. Counselors there do not sell insurance.
Do retired Texas teachers or state workers use regular Medicare plans?
Many have retiree coverage through TRS-Care or ERS with its own Medicare rules. Check those options before you buy an individual plan, since dropping retiree coverage can be hard to undo.
