Part A premiums
Most people pay $0 for Part A because they or a spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 40 quarters, about 10 years. People with fewer quarters can buy Part A for a monthly premium.
Higher premiums for higher incomes
If your income two years ago was above $109,000 for a single filer or $218,000 for a joint filer, you pay more for Part B and Part D. This surcharge is called IRMAA. Social Security sets it from your tax return, and you can ask for a new decision if your income dropped because of retirement or another life change.
